Dental Implant Process Step by Step in Diamond Bar

How many visits you need, and how long the whole process takes, depends on two things: how much healthy bone you have and what will be placed on top of the implants. Your exam answers both.

What we can tell you up front: an implant is a two-part process. After the titanium root is placed, it needs six weeks to several months to fuse with your jawbone. If a bone graft is needed first, that adds roughly two to four months. Here is each step in order.

Step 1: Exam and treatment planning

Your first visit is about looking, not drilling. Dr. Cho or Dr. Jeon checks how much bone you have in the area, because that is the first thing that decides whether an implant can succeed. At the same visit they decide whether a bone graft makes sense.

Our office uses iTero intraoral scanning and digital X-rays to see your teeth and jaw in detail. The plan also covers how many implants you need and what will be attached to them. Implants don't move the way natural teeth do, so that count is planned carefully.

New patients can ask about our $99 new patient special, which lists an exam, panoramic X-rays, an iTero scan, an oral cancer screening and a consultation. Call to confirm what it includes for implant planning.

Step 2 (only if needed): Bone graft first

If there isn't enough bone, an implant may not fuse properly and the treatment can fail. In that case the usual route is a bone graft before any implant is placed.

The doctors will go through the graft material options with you and explain the pros and cons of each: your own bone, human donor bone, animal bone (usually from a cow), or a synthetic material.

Healing takes time. Full recovery from a bone graft usually takes about two to four months, and around the four-month mark the bone is generally fully integrated. Everyone heals differently, so your timeline may vary.

Step 3: Implant placement surgery

Dr. Cho or Dr. Jeon surgically places a titanium artificial root into your jawbone. Dr. Jeon also performs molar implant surgery.

The implant sits just below the gum line. A small "healing cap" keeps gum tissue from growing over or into it while you heal.

If the thought of surgery makes you nervous, tell us when you book. We offer anesthesia and sedation for anxious patients, and your doctor will explain which option fits your situation.

Step 4: Healing, then your new teeth

Next comes the waiting period. The implant needs six weeks to several months to fuse with the jawbone, which is what gives it stability.

Once it has healed, your replacement tooth or teeth are built on top. Your plan sets the type:

  • One tooth: a single implant with its own crown.
  • Several missing teeth: two or three implants can support a fixed bridge. The bridge sits on abutments screwed into the implants.
  • A full row: All-on-4 uses four implants per jaw, and implants can also support a removable denture.

After that, routine check-ups with Dr. Cho or Dr. Jeon help keep your implants in good shape. See risks and aftercare for what to watch for.

How long does it take overall?

We can't promise one number, because it depends on your bone and your plan. Here are the pieces we can name:

  • Exam and planning: one visit to start.
  • Bone graft, if needed: about two to four months of healing.
  • Implant healing: six weeks to several months.

Your doctor will give you a schedule built around your own case. For fees, see cost and insurance. To compare options, visit implant types.

We are at 646 N Diamond Bar Blvd. Hours are Monday to Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM and Friday 8 AM to noon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many visits does a dental implant take?+

We don't set a fixed number in advance. It depends on whether you need a bone graft, how many implants you need, and what goes on top of them. After your exam, Dr. Cho or Dr. Jeon can lay out the visits for your case.

How long do I wait between placement and getting my new tooth?+

The implant needs six weeks to several months to fuse with your jawbone before the final restoration. The exact wait depends on how your bone heals, and your doctor will guide the timing.

Do I need a bone graft first?+

Not everyone does. Your doctor checks your available bone at the exam and decides. If a graft is needed, it usually takes about two to four months to heal before the implant step.
