Which implant option fits? Start with the types
Implants are not one-size-fits-all. Our implant types comparison walks through the main choices. Here is the short version.
- One missing tooth: a single implant replaces the tooth.
- Several missing teeth: two or three implants can support a fixed bridge. The bridge shows more teeth than there are implants, and abutments screwed into the implants hold it.
- Many or all teeth missing: implants can support a removable denture. Several implants are linked with a cast metal bar, and clips inside the denture snap onto it.
The number of implants and the type of restoration on top are planned together, so we do not pick one before the other.
All-on-4 for a full row of teeth
If you are replacing an entire row, ask about All-on-4. Four implants are placed in the upper jaw, the lower jaw, or both. Replacement teeth are then fixed onto them, so they are less likely to slip the way traditional dentures can.
The main requirement is enough jawbone. If bone is low, a bone graft can often come first. Grafted bone usually takes about two to four months to heal fully, and each person is different.
Dr. Jeon has completed a course on complex and full-arch implant cases called "Beyond the 3-Unit Bridge." Your exam shows whether this approach suits you.
What to expect, and how many trips to plan
Implants are a two-part process. Dr. Cho or Dr. Jeon places a titanium root in the jawbone, and a small "healing cap" keeps gum tissue from growing over it. The implant then needs six weeks to several months to fuse with the bone.
So plan for more than one visit, spread over time. The exact number depends on your plan, and we can lay out the schedule at your consultation. Our treatment process page explains the steps.
If dental visits make you nervous, we offer anesthesia and sedation. Ask us about it when you call.
